During the COVID 19 lockdown period, BIG hosted a Virtual Q+A panel discussion consisting of Industry Professionals - Alan Pert (Melbourne School of Design), Janis Fischer (Tract), Shannon Stewart (Vicinity Centres) and Matthew Robertson (WT Partnership). This multi-disciplinary panel shared knowledge and advice about the future of the built environments industry and how students and graduates can prepare for the workforce.

Meet the Team: Architects, Planners, and more
In Collaboration with
Industry Professionals from Architecture + Engineering + Heritage + Planning + Project Management share their experience working together as a team of consultants to deliver a major project. Students were able to learn about how project issues were resolved through multidisciplinary collaboration from concept design to completion.
Instead of having firms presenting at the MSD, we collaborated with Buchan Melbourne on the topic of Chadstone Shopping Centre and Architectus on the topic of State Library Victoria Redevelopment to held the discussion at their office.
Master's Social Night
Classmates are future industry peers, but we are often so caught up in our studies that we do not take time out to socialise and get to know our peers.
In Master's Social Night, students had the chance to grow their peer to peer network over a casual drink, with students across the MSD disciplines including Architecture, Construction, Landscape Architecture, Planning & Property. With over 200 students in attendance from across the MSD cohorts, our first Master’s Social Night was a hit!
Lunch with Young Alumni
In Collaboration with
Students had the opportunity to meet a UniMelb young alumna or alumnus of their chosen discipline for lunch and meet with two other students who share similar interests. Students were able to ask anything about the industry, gain career advice and to grow their network.
Creating Your Career
This year, we invited 5 Industry panelists from Icon, JLL, m3property, Vicinity Centres and WT Partnership to share insider knowledge and advice on how to be the most desirable candidate when approaching firms to get started in the industry. Creating Your Career gives students a head start in their career in the Property and Construction industry.
Open Day Series
March - April
Teachers don’t approach prospective students to showcase their university. Instead, universities organise Open Days to allow students to experience it first hand, as opposed to simply hearing or reading about it.
We aim to apply this same approach with students and the work place, reversing the traditional Industry Night model to maximise student experience and engagement.
Architecture Showcase Evening
As one of the most attended student events at the Melbourne School of
Design, Architecture Showcase Evening is an opportunity for design
practices to connect with students through presentations and networking.
5 firms presented their practice, design process, and how graduates were involved in a project. Followed by a catered networking session providing industry representatives and students the opportunity to meet on a personal level.
Lunch with a Young Professional
Students often don’t have the confidence or the resources to approach industry professionals to ask for study and career advice.
We aim to connect students with recently graduated young professionals to provide students with relevant career advice.
Career Journeys in Construction & Property
Careers Journey in Construction and Property provides a platform for students to meet and network with industry representatives so as to encourage professional development and personal growth.
Property Networking Night
Property Networking Night provides students the opportunity to hear and meet representatives of the industry, equipping them with greater insights on a career in the property sector.
